Photo special: Latvala's ditch exit

The Finn was trying to close a 0.8sec gap to leader Sébastien Ogier when he went off, skidding his Volkswagen Polo R into a deep, water-filled ditch 600 metres into the 3.19km Sweet Lamb stage.  "It was a really stupid thing," the Finn acknowledged. "I changed the front-right tyre before the stage and it looks like I didn't get enough heat in it because on the first junction it was locking up. Then on the second it locked again straight away on braking, the engine stalled and after that I couldn't steer the car and I went straight into the ditch.
