Co-driver Damen killed in cross country rally accident

Belgian co-driver Jurgen Damen has died as a result of the injuries sustained in an incident in the Qatar round of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup. The 42-year-old was seriously injured when the car driven by Rene Kuipers crashed during Monday's first stage of the Qatari event. Dutch media reports Damen broke his neck in the accident. He received on-site medical attention before he was transferred to hospital in Doha, where he succumbed to his injuries. "The FIA wishes to extend its most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Damen, as well as team mates, fellow competitors, officials and event organiser," said the FIA in a statement.
